Gatsby Framework

In 2013 The Gatsby Foundation commissioned Sir John Holman to research what pragmatic actions could improve career guidance in England. The Good Career Guidance Benchmarks which emerged from the report have now been adopted as part of the Government's careers strategy for schools and colleges.

The Gatsby Benchmarks are a framework of 8 guidelines that define the best careers provision in secondary schools and colleges. The Black Country Skills Factory have been working with schools and colleges since 2016 to embed the framework across the Careers Hub and Enterprise Adviser Network. The eight Gatsby benchmarks of Good Career Guidance are:

  1. A stable careers programme
  2. Learning from career and labour market information
  3. Addressing the needs of each pupil
  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
  5. Encounters with employers and employees
  6. Experiences of workplaces
  7. Encounters with further and higher education
  8. Personal guidance
