Young artists invited to gallery’s free skills sessions

Wolverhampton Art Gallery is inviting young artists to take part in free sessions to develop their skills.

ArtForum is an arts youth group based at the Lichfield Street gallery, where participants can try out a range of art activities and make personalised artwork.

The sessions are for young people aged 14 to 25 and provide the opportunity to learn about how the gallery works, make research trips to other galleries to meet other arts youth groups, work with a range of arts and gallery professionals, get involved with special events, learn new skills, find out more about a career in the arts, and take advantage of a range of volunteering opportunities in the arts sector.

Artists who take part on a regular, long-term basis can also work towards their Bronze or Gold Arts Award, for which up to 35 UCAS points can be gained.

Councillor John Reynolds, City of Wolverhampton Council Cabinet Member for City Economy, said:

Wolverhampton Art Gallery has a strong track record of engaging with teenagers in a way that allows them to dictate their own experience. ArtForum enables young people to develop their skills, and work with peers locally and further afield.”

Rosalind Manasseh, Wolverhampton Art Gallery Cultural Learning Facilitator for Visitor Economy, added:

The young people gain lots of transferable skills which can assist them in finding further education or job opportunities in the future - we also have lot of fun too!”

Twenty-year-old ArtForum regular Holly Pleydell from Wolverhampton (pictured), completed her final presentation last week.

This is the final step in achieving her GOLD Arts Award, which she has been working on with the gallery team for the past five years.

Artforum takes place on the first and third Wednesday of every month. The next sessions are on June 6 & 20 and July 4 and 18, between 4.30pm and 6.30pm.
