Volunteer Recruitment Fair at Dudley Canal Trust’s New Portal Centre

Dudley Canal and Tunnel Trust will be holding a volunteer recruitment fair on Friday 10th June as part of National Volunteers’ Week 2016. The recruitment fair will enable the local community to learn more about the volunteering opportunities that the Trust has to offer and will be held at the Portal.

Major funding partners for the project to create the Portal include grants from the European Regional Development Fund £997,000, Heritage Lottery Fund £989,000, Biffa Award £500,000, and a loan from the Black Country Local Enterprise Partnership. Other charitable donors include The Garfield Weston Foundation, J P Getty Jr Charitable Trust, Headley Trust, The Wolfson Foundation, Dudley Canal Trust, Dudley Canal Trust (Trips), and £30,000 raised by a public appeal.

"We have a whole range of volunteering roles to choose from, so there really are opportunities here for everyone,” said Rebecca Cooper-Sayer, Volunteer Co-Ordinator at Dudley Canal Trust (Trips) Ltd. "Whether you enjoy being out on the towpath tying up boats, or whether reading stories to toddlers on our Toddler boat trips is more your thing. We have roles for you.”

The event will highlight all of the different volunteer roles available within the Trust so that visitors can gain a better understanding of how they can help support the work that they do, whilst gaining new skills, building their self-confidence and meeting new people. Current volunteers will be on hand to share their experiences and staff will be able to answer any questions that people may have about upcoming opportunities within the organisation.

"I’ve been volunteering as a Community Ambassador for Dudley Canal Trust for around two years, and it’s a fantastic place to volunteer,” said John Chapman, Community Ambassador Volunteer at Dudley Canal Trust (Trips) Ltd. "The team here are really friendly, flexible and welcoming. You can give as much or as little of your time as you wish, which is great for me.”

The fair will take place at the Trust’s new heritage centre, the Portal on Friday 10th June between 11am and 4pm. Anybody interested in volunteering is encouraged to attend.
