City of Wolverhampton Council has named its preferred developer to deliver a multi-million-pound housing scheme at Bilston Urban Village.
Award-winning home builder and regeneration specialist Countryside Properties is currently undertaking site investigations on the brownfield land south of Bilston town centre and the Black Country Route.
Further discussions will then take place before an official agreement is signed by both parties for the development of up to 450 homes across 27 acres.
Councillor Peter Bilson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for City Assets and Housing, said: “Countryside Properties has beaten off some stiff competition from other developers and we will now work closely with them to finalise the scheme.
“Our plans to develop up to 450 homes on the Bilston Urban Village site will make a significant impact in achieving our housing targets in the City of Wolverhampton.
“The council has spent a lot of time making sure there is good road access, and ensuring that, with a bus-only link, cycle ways and pedestrian routes, the new housing will be well connected to the town centre.
“The urban village is a key part of the wider regeneration of the city, bringing new homes, new jobs and more investment. It demonstrates our commitment to Bilston and ensures it will continue to be a thriving area.”
Countryside Properties made City of Wolverhampton’s i10 development its new regional headquarters in April 2016.
John Gilbert, Regional Operations Director for the Midlands division, added: “We are delighted to have been chosen as the preferred developer for the Bilston Urban Village site.
“We are looking forward to working with the council on producing a scheme to be proud of – that can become our flagship development in what is a new region for us.
“We appreciate we are in the early stages and are carrying out the necessary due diligence on site to take us through to the official contract being signed.”
Kier is already developing 78 units comprising one, two, three and four-bedroom properties on two other Bilston Urban Village plots either side of the entrance to Carder Crescent.
The Urban Village development will also include extensive areas of open space, footpaths and a water feature.
The first phase of Bilston Urban Village produced significant investment in the building of the Bert Williams Leisure Centre and South Wolverhampton and Bilston Academy – improving health and increasing opportunities. A commercial development plot fronting the Black Country Route and the direct pedestrian linkage of the site with the town centre was also created.
