The Black Country LEP alongside the 4 Black Country local authorities; Wolverhampton, Sandwell, Walsall and Dudley received the Highly Commended Innovation Award at this year’s West Midlands Celebrating Constructions Awards.
The high profile awards dinner held at the ICC in Birmingham on Friday 13 May 2016 celebrated the best of this year’s regional construction projects, with more than six hundred property leaders and innovators from across the construction sector.
The Black Country partnership submitted the Ontrack WM project: a forward-thinking vision to nurture supply chain opportunities and essential skills that future industry will need through the development of a pioneering virtual high speed train and rail portal; as part of the sought after Innovation Award.
Facing tough category competition from organisations such as Cundall, Ramboll UK and RCM, the Black Country partnership were beaten to first place by Cundall as award winners for the Cundall Virtual Acoustic Reality project.
The joint entry in the Innovation category has earned recognition and praise from construction experts and peers from the judging panel who stated that: "The Black Country partnership is leading the way, no other region is applying excellent collaboration to innovate using creative procurement to develop 3D supply chain engagement portals. OnTrack WM is current, topical and extremely relevant, a ground-breaking digital representation of a high speed rail project embedded with real-life procurement opportunities, a unique BIM framework to coach and prepare the rail sector supply chain equipping them with valuable and much needed skills".
Wayne Langford, Director – Investment & Growth of the Black Country Consortium said: "This new technology and digital tool has inspired West Midlands firms to forge links, get fit and ready to supply current and future rail improvement projects set for our region”.
