New Degree Apprenticeship further boosts skills in healthcare sector

The University of Wolverhampton has introduced a new Degree Apprenticeship to further boost skills in the healthcare sector.

The Occupational Therapy Degree Apprenticeship will be available in April 2021 and is accredited by the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC).

Occupational therapy (OT) is a branch of health care that takes a “whole-person approach” to both mental and physical health and wellbeing and enables individuals to achieve their full potential.

The new Degree Apprenticeship, on offer to those employed within a health or care setting for a minimum of 30 hours a week in England and supported by their employer, is aligned to the requirements of the regulatory, professional and apprenticeship standards and will allow graduates to apply to register with the HCPC as an Occupational Therapist.

Dr Alex Hopkins, Dean of the Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing at the University, said:

“This Apprenticeship is both a professional and academic award designed to equip employees with the necessary knowledge, skills and behaviours required to become an occupational therapist.

“The programme has been developed with healthcare placement partners and is designed for individuals who are working in any health or social care setting in a role that is related to occupational therapy. It will be of interest for people entering or working in the sector and are looking to progress from a support role or equivalent.”

Skills and training are delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, online learning and employer-led projects alongside full-time placements and on the job training. Apprentices will attend University one day a week and must secure practice-based learning.

Employers or employees interested in the new Degree Apprenticeship should call 0800 953 3222 or email: apprenticeshiphub@wlv.ac.uk. Find out more about Degree Apprenticeships and funding on the website.
