The Dudley Canal and Tunnel Trust’s visitor centre, the Portal, will be home to an exhibition by local Castle Art Group over the next two months. Large and striking floral studies sit next to dainty watercolours of architecture and canal side scenes.
The Castle Art Group meets weekly in the Visual Arts Studio at Castle High School in Dudley. The members of the group are amateur artists who enjoy developing their skills. They are encouraged to experiment in a wide range of media including drawing, painting and printmaking. Although most participate for pleasure, some members choose to follow a more formal path in order to gain qualifications such as GCSE and A level Art and Design.
The exhibition features works in a range of media created by Castle Art Group students, including Acrylic, Oil, Watercolour and Pastels. Subjects include bright and rich studies from nature such as Jess Harris’ ‘Peony’ and Veronica Price’s ‘Orange Wallflowers’. Students have also chosen local studies such as Ann Shirley’s ‘Canal Bridge’ and ‘Dudley Castle’.
“We’re so pleased to be able to display such beautiful works by a range of artists from the local Castle Art Group”, said Holly Wain, Heritage Activities Assistant at Dudley Canal Trust (Trips) Ltd.
“These artists have captured natural and local scenes in such different styles and techniques that this exhibition has something to offer all of our visitors”.
Major funding partners for the project to create the Portal include the European Regional Development Fund £997,000, Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) £989,200, Black Country Local Enterprise Partnership £755,000 and Biffa Award £500,000. Other charitable donors include The Garfield Weston Foundation, J P Getty Jr Charitable Trust, Headley Trust, The Wolfson Foundation, Dudley Canal Trust, Dudley Canal Trust (Trips), and £30,000 raised by a public appeal.
The exhibition is free to visit and will be running up to 15th February.
All of the original artwork featured in the exhibition will be for sale.
