Government funding has been made available for the Council to pay a range of support grants to businesses.
These grants are called Local Restriction Support Grants and Sandwell businesses can now apply online at www.sandwell.gov.uk/supportforbusinesses.
Eligible businesses may be entitled to payments of up to £3,000.
Businesses that were forced to close during the national lockdown can apply for a grant. This is likely to include businesses from the hospitality trade as well as non-essential shops, hair and beauty salons, gyms and fitness centres.
Following the lockdown period, businesses forced to close under tier 3 restrictions are entitled to a further grant payment. The list of businesses eligible for this grant includes pubs and restaurants as well as leisure venues such as indoor play centres, cinemas and theatres.
In addition, a discretionary grant is available to businesses that have closed but do not pay business rates, and businesses that have not been required to close, but are still severely impacted by national or local restrictions.
Councillor Wasim Ali, cabinet member for resources and core services, said:
"I urge businesses to apply for the grants they are entitled to.
"Our team has written to businesses we think are eligible. If you run a business in Sandwell please go online and make your applications at www.sandwell.gov.uk/supportforbusinesses.
"These are very difficult times and the grants should go some way to helping those businesses forced to close as well as those who suffered a loss in trade due to the pandemic prior to the lockdown."
Grants are also available for those businesses who were not forced to close but suffered a downturn in trade from the period of 14 October to 4 November when Sandwell was placed into tier two.
Councillor Maria Crompton, deputy leader at Sandwell Council added:
“We know the pandemic has had a devastating effect on local businesses but these grants should help those struggling to make ends meet.
"We want Sandwell businesses to thrive again once the pandemic is over so please go to the Sandwell website to find out if your business is eligible for a grant."
To apply business owners should log onto Sandwell Council's website where there is an explanation of the different grants available and select the grant that applies to them: www.sandwell.gov.uk/supportforbusinesses.
